Um, uh, can I ask you a question?

Getting a new iphone is not easy. They are not available online and there's a significant wait to buy one at an AT&T store. The best way to get an iphone is at an Apple store. You cannot reserve an iphone or make a reservation, and the stores will only let you know the availability of iphones at 9:00 pm the night before.

Nilda and I went to the 14th Street store this weekend, and they were sold out by the time we got there, around 4:00. Apparently, you have to get there at 8:00 am to receive a voucher, then come back before 6:00 pm to pick up your iphone, which must be activated before you leave the store, and there was a line of people waiting - reading newspapers! - to pick up their iphones. You have to dedicate a whole day to buying this thing and it's more of a pain in the ass than it's probably worth.

So my question is, should I get the 8G or the 16G?

1. You can't order one online or make an appt to get one.
2. 3 songs is an amazing number, but I was looking for like, I don't know, 7 songs.
3. That's an auction site and I don't feel like spending $750 for an unlocked first generation ipod unlocked by some high school kid that might, just might, actually work.
4. YOU are welcome, sir!!!

1. You can order in person from any AT&T store. Takes 10-14 business days (2 friends just did it).

2. 3 IS a lot of tunes!

3. Only the EBay tab on the left side is auctions. Try changing it to Apple. Looks like there are some in Paramus right now.

4. YOU are welcome, Commander!

16. Duh.
Also, Paramus?! No, David Blaine.

(Seriously, I wish I could tell you which of the 3 NY stores had the most inventory, but I haven't been following it. Boooo, me.)

why would we order something in person that takes an unpredicatble amount of days when his contract is up on a specific day in Sept. and he has to activate the phone on the day he purchases it?

honey, maybe if we start walking to paramus now we can get there by Friday. ha ha

so order it now and you'll have it for when your contract expires. hello.

True dat, Anonymous!

ha ha ha it's like anonymous thinks we didn't graduate 2nd grade. let me make it easy: you can't leave the store w/o activating the phone, which you can't do (if you want to keep your phone #) w/o having your contract up with your other provider or canceling early ($175 says that's not happening) and you must pick up your phone within 48 hours once it arrives. and now we're back to the top. =)

god forbid you go a few days with no phone if there happens to be a gap in timing.

A friend of mine got his last Monday morning after an unfortunate hottub-related incident with his blackberry. I assume he went to the SoHo store, since he lives downtown. As far as I know, he's not actually a magician. (Or even David Blaine!)

So you want me to ask him if he did anything special? Or does this purely anecdotal evidence convince you that you, too, have the wherewithal to go to a store and buy something?

You don't just get your service shut off if your contract runs out! AT&T just extends the service on a month-to-month basis.

When we renewed our contract, we found out that it had expired 3 months ago. As long as you pay, there's no problem.

So if Brian is having so much trouble getting the phone, order it in person and have the store activate it when you're ready.

This should solve all the problems you're worried about. Just because you graduated 2nd grade doesn't make you not stupid. HAH!!

FYI, as someone who OWNS an iPhone, I want to reiterate that the phone doesn not get activated until you sync it up with iTunes on your home computer and follow the computer generated activation process. It is different from a regular phone.

It's funny how my blog about my research has been completely ignored. You can't activate the iphone at home anymore, that was only with the old iphone. I have a JOB that makes spending the day at an apple store hard, and the lines at the AT&T stores are ridiculous!

So really, why the 16G over the 8G? Does it make that much of a difference?

If you're going to use you iPhone as an actual iPod, with lots of music and/or videos, then you should get more space. If you'll keep using the iPod for music, then the smaller size is probably fine.

It's silly to have an iPhone and continue to carry around an iPod. That's what the iPhone's for.

I have an 8G, and when I wanna put movies or TV shows on, I find I have to swap them out. That is, I can't have more than about 1 DVD's worth on at a time. And that's with about 850 songs on. (That's another thing you'll have to be choosy about -- you don't have room to just put your whole iTunes catalogue on there.)

Finally, everyone knows bigger really is better!
